DOWNSTREAM FROM TULCEA TO THE BLACK SEA
Route Description:
Area: Danube Delta – a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Dates of departure: May – October 2009

Trip duration: 8days /7 nights
Gear: Backpack, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, front light, waterproof and warm changing clothes, a cap, water can, sweets, mosquito repellent lotion, sun lotion, first-aid kit and if possible binoculars.
1ST DAY – Arrival in Tulcea
arrival in Tulcea meeting with the guide and short visit around the town (if time allows it)
transfer to Câşlita Village by taxi (5km from Tulcea, next to Câşlita Lake – our starting point in exploring the delta)

2ND DAY – First birds, first strokes
Câşlita Lake – Tulcea arm – Tulcea – Sulina Arm – Partizani Village – Păpădia Channel
after breakfast (not included) and packing we start the day with some paddling practicing on the lake
out birdwatching tour starts: exciting birds like White Pelicans, Mute Swans, Kingfishers, Pygmy Cormorants or Glossy Ibises are just some of the star species a birdwatcher can meet on this day.

3RD DAY – Away from the tourist’s tracks
Păpădia Veche Channel – Păpădia Noua – Ciobanică Channel – Maliuc Village area

we start exploring one of the remote areas of the delta. In these channels few tourists are exploring. Some of the waterways are out of reach for the motor boats, so most of the day we will only hear the sound of the water and birds songs

4TH DAY – Mila23, birth place of Ivan Patzaichin
Maliuc – Fortuna Lake – Şontea Channel – Mila23 Village – Eracle Channel (24km)
breakfast (not included)
we raise camp and head for birdwatching on Fortuna Lake. The lake is known for the large numbers of bird species feeding here and also huge numbers of individuals. It is also a hunting ground for the White Tail Eagle.
short stop in Mila23, a typical Lipovan fishermen village, birth place of Ivan Patzaichin, the most well known Lipovan Russian in the world. Between 1968 and 1984, he won seven Olympic medals(4 gold and 3 silver) and eight world championships in canoeing. The village stands on the right bank of the Old Danube, the natural route of Sulina Arm. It is a small community of hard working people and very religious.

after the stop in the village we paddle on Eracle Channel heading for our camping place

5TH DAY – From the big lakes – to the sand dunes through pelican’s territory
Eracle Channel –Trei Iezere Lake – La amiază Lake – Bogdaproste Lake – Bogdaproste Channel – Old Danube – Magearu Channel – Letea Village (25km)

we start the day with crossing Trei Iezere Lake, admiring the White Waterlilies (Nimphea alba)
Trei Iezere and Bogdaproste are one of the large lakes of the delta situated 15km south west from Roşca Buhaiova restricted area. Roşca Buhaiova is protected because it hosts the largest White Pelican colony in Europe.

Bogdaproste Channel and Old Danube will take us towards the sand dunes from Letea Sand Barrier. Letea Village is one of the most remote settlements in the delta. Traditional reed roofs and fences, sandy roads, absolute tranquility and peace, vegetables in the gardens growing on white sand, free wondering horses and cows are some of the characteristics of the fisherman village.

6TH DAY – On the Black Sea
Letea Channel – Barbos Channel – Cardon – Musura Bay – Sulina (21 km)

we leave the village heading south around the Letea Sand Barrier.
around midday we arrive in Cardon, a small village with only a few inhabitants.

after a few kilometers on one of the youngest natural channels we get the first glimpses of the Black Sea
crossing the bay we have the chance of observing Dalmatian Pelicans (only a few hundred left in the Danube Delta), Sandwich Terns, Caspian Terns, Marsh Terns, Purple Herons and many other interesting bird species
in the evening we arrive in Sulina
traditional dinner with traditional fish dishes (included)
accommodation in a traditional, build on pillars pension house.
7TH DAY – With our feet, back on solid ground
Breakfast(not included) Cultural tour of Sulina, the most eastern Town of Romania, a very cosmopolite community, home for Romanians, Lipovans, Turkish, Jews, Italians, Kahols, Greeks and Tartar almost 6000 inhabitants leaving with no interethnic conflicts. Many of the important buildings from Sulina are from the XVIII or XIX century, from the period when The Danube European Commission had its headquarters in Sulina. Then Sulina being Porto Franco, a free of taxes area, developed a lot. There were seven foreign consulates: England, Italian states, Germany, Turkish Empire, Austria, Russia that along with the Romanian one established Sulina own trade laws.
visit the Lighthouse museum, The Old Graveyard(where Germans, Italians, Greeks, English, Lipovans, Turks are buried) and the promenade after lunch (included) we head for the beach (free time)
