TRANSYLVANIA (CENTER AND SOUTH)

Route Description:

Brasov- Fagaras- Avrig- Sibiu- Saliste- Sebes- Alba Iulia- Teius- Blaj- Medias- Biertan- Sighisoara- Rupea- Feldioara- Harman- Prejmer- Brasov

The itinerary is imagined to permit visiting some of the most representative cities, countryside towns and other medieval monuments from the centre and the south of Transylvania

Avrig: village settled on Olt valley. Fortress (ruins); memorial museum Gheorghe Lazar; museum of ethnography; the folk school of textures and  seams; Brukenthal castle (XVIII century). Surroundings: the chalets Poiana Neamtului, 706m alt., Baracaciu-1550m. alt., Negoiu-1546m. alt., Suru summit-2282m. alt., Avrig lake-2011m. alt.

Sibiu: city settled on the shores of Cibin; residence of Sibiu district. Vestiges from the Neolithic age, hypothetical Dacian-Roman settlement-Cedonia; documentary attested in the Middle Age, in 1192. Medieval city (XIII-XVIII; vestiges); Pasajul scarilor, Podul minciunilor (XIX century); Brukethal museum, the oldest from the country (1817); Exhibit –the history of the city (Turnul Sfatului, 1588); Exhibit of weapons and hunting trophies, unique in the country; monuments of architecture (XIII-XIX centuries); the museum of popular techniques (in Dumbrava).

Brasov: city settled at the foots of Tampa mountain (550m.alt) at the south side of Tara Barsei; capita-city of Brasov district. Dacian-Roman vestiges, old Romanian settlement (Schei-XII century). The second industrial centre from the country-tractors, auto-trucks, chemical products, textiles, foot wear. Fortress (towers, gates and walls, XV-XVI century); architecture monuments ( XIV-XVIII century); museums (Casa Sfantului, Schei, Bastionul Tesatorilor); art galleries, theatres. Marked paths, funicular.

Fagaras: city placed on the middle course of Olt, in “Tara Fagarasului”-“The country of Fagaras”, known also as “Terra Blachorum” in the XIII century. Museum of history, ethnography, natural sciences; castle (XIV-XVII centuries) and fortress (XVIII century); monument of architecture (XVII-XVIII). Surroundings: Sambata touristic complex (690-1400m. alt.)

Saliste: village at the foot of the northern versant of Cibin mountains. Old Romanian settlement mentioned in documents -1322-1366. Traditional centre of the ethno-folkloric area Marginimea Sibiului. Museum of history and folk art.

Sebes: city set on the inferior course of the river with the same name. Daco-Roman vestiges; documentary attested in 1245. Fortress (XV century; marks); museum of history and ethnography. Surroundings: Sebes valley, upstream (Geto-Dacian and Roman vestiges; hydro-energetic projects)

Alba Iulia : city placed at the confluence of Ampoi with Mures; residence city of Alba district. Vestiges from the Neolithic époque, Dacian fortification (Apolum, II-I BC), roman city (Colonia Aurelia Apulenis, 180-193 AC);documentary mentioned in Middle Ages, at 1097. Alba Carolina fortress (1716-1735); Union Museum with sections of archeology, history, ethnography, plastic arts; Battyaneum library (1792); monuments of architecture (XIII-XVIII century). Surroundings:  Craiva village (vestiges of Apoulon fortress, at Piatra Cravii, around 1000m. alt.)

Teius: village placed close to the confluence of Teius river (Geoagiu) with Mures. Antique settlement, probably Ratka, named also Tyvys, Villa Spinarum (XIII-XIV century) or Dreikirchen-15000. Important railway connection, fruit-growing centre. Monument of architecture -1200, 1449, 1500. Surroundings: Ramet chalet (426m. alt.), upstream on Georgiului valley, Rametilor keys (Trascaului mountains).

Blaj: city set at the confluence of the two Tarnave. Documentary attested in 1275 under the name of Villa Herboldi. Campia Libertatii (The freedom field)- statuary complex, history museum, Teiul lui Eminescu –Eminescu’s linden tree.

Medias: city set on the shores of Tarnava mare river. Vestiges from the Bronze Age and Iron Age; documentary attested in 1267 – Villa Medies. Fortress (XIV-XV; vestiges); museum of history; monuments of architecture (XVI-XVII century). Surroundings:  Baza (permanent balneal-climacteric resort, 321m. alt., recommended for treating the diseases of locomotive system, genecology).

Biertan: village placed on the valley of the river with the same name. ancient settlement, vestiges from IV century. Ground fortress; medieval fortification (1522), trough the most imposing from Transylvania; old architecture (XVIII-XIX with the symbols of the past’s crafts.

Sighisoara: city set on the shore of the river Tarnava Mare. Marks of Wietengerg, Dacian, Roman cultures; documentary attested in 1191, 1288; fortress (XIII-XVI), the most representative  medieval urban settlement from the country; history museum; monuments of architecture (XIII-XVIII); Pasajul Scarilor.

Rupea: city placed in the neighborhood of the superior stream of Olt. Vestiges from Neolithic, marks of some pre-feudal settlements. Peasant settlement of Cohlam (VIII-XVII centuries); monuments of architecture (XIV-XVI)’ springs with mineral water.

Feldioara: village set on the superior valley of Olt. Marks of Daco-Roman antiquity ; in Middle Ages, residence of ordinului cavalerilor teutoni –the order of Teuton knights(1211-1225). Marienburg stronghold (XIV-XV century); monument of architecture (XIII-XVII centuries).

Harman: village settled on the superior stream of Olt. Peasant fortress (XV-XVI)

Prejmer: village settled in the environ of the superior valley of Olt. Peasant’s fortress (XV-XVI), the most powerful stronghold from medieval Transylvania.
