Is a trip that reveals some of the great touristic values of Oltenia

Craiova: city placed on the inferior course of Jiu; residence of Dolj district, Dacian settlement (Pelendava), Roman camp; documentary attested in 1475; residence of the leaders of Oltenia (XV-XIX centuries). Museums of history, plastic arts, natural sciences, ethnography; Casa Banei (1699); Memorial Museum “Tradem” (Traian Demetrescu) and Elena Farago; monuments of architecture ( XVII-XVIII century).

Strehaia: city from the Motrului Valley. Old settlement, former capital of the district (XV century). Leader’s fortress (XV-XVII; partially restored)

Drobeta Turnu Severin: city-harbor at Danube; residence of Mehedinti district. Geto-Dacian settlement, Drobeta, Roman city, feudal fortress- trough the first in the country. The museum “Portile de Fier”, Roman camp Drobeta (II AC), thermals, vestiges of the bridge built over Danube by Apolodor (102-105); fortress (XIII-XIV; ruins) statues of Decebal and Traian. Surroundings: Crihala forest; Portile de Fier (hydro-energetic and navigation complex).

Motru: city set in the meadow of the river with the same name, developed after 1960, on the place of the former village Plosnita. Important mine-lignite centre. Surroundings: Glogova village (Cula, one of the most interesting monuments of civil architecture from XVII-XVIII)

Baia de Arama: city set in the superior basin of Motru. Ancient mine exploitation (Chalchis) reach at apogee during Matei Basarab; Tudor Vladimirescu (bust C. Balcescu). Surroundings: Ponoarele village (Zatoane lakes, the natural bridge, the lilac forest, archaic technical installations); Bala village ( seasonal balneal climacteric resort, 350m. alt., recommended for treating the affections of locomotive system, alimentary channel etc.)

Tismana: village set on the valley of the shore with the same name. hydro-energetic arrangements. Folkloric area of tradition (materials and specific cloths); “Festivalul cantecului si dansului gorjan”-“The festival of the Gorjan music and dance” (half of August); historic monument and of architecture; Surroundings: natural reservation ( comestibles chestnuts), karst phenomena.

Hobita: village placed on Gorjean Bistrita valley. House-museum Constantin Brancusi; wood architecture, traditional.

Targu Jiu: city placed on the shores of Jiu; residence of Gorj district. Geto-Dacian settlement, administrative centre of Jales realm (XV century).  The complex of the monumental sculptures of Constantin Brancusi; museum of history, plastic art, monuments of architecture (XVIII century); the memorial house and the mausoleum of Ecaterina Teodoroiu. Surroundings: Curtisoara village ( The museum of the Gorjan village, Cornoiu dome (XVIII century), Runcu village (Runcului-Sohodol keys, Sohodol chalet).

Sacelu: village settled on Casnei valley, permanent balneal-climacteric resort (340m. alt.), with mineral waters and mud used since Roman époque; develops after 1866. Therapeutic indications: affections of locomotive system, genecology, otorinolarinology, hepatic affections, gastritis. The Roman baths (vestiges); monument of architecture (XVIII century)-museum of history and archeology. Surroundings: Crasna village (monuments of architecture-1636, XVIII century); Magura Crasnei peak -1497m. alt.

Horezu: city set in the depression with the same name. Well-known borough in XVIII. Museum of ethnography; artisanal  workshop (ceramics, fabrics, wood-carving); monument of architecture (XVIII). Surrounding: Maldarasti village (domes, museums  of folk arts); Romani village (historic monument and of architecture, founded Constantin Brancoveanu, XVII century)

Govora: city set on the valley of Hintia river; permanent balneal-climacteric resort (370m. alt.), founded in 1880. Therapeutic indications: affections of the locomotive system, respiratory, otorinolaringology, nutritional diseases. Surroundings: Govora village (monument of architecture, XV-XVIII centuries).

Ocnele Mari: placed on the shores of Valea Sarata river, the oldest saline exploitation from the country, documentary attested in 1373; seasonal balneal resort (310m.alt.) recommended in treating the affections of the locomotive system, genecology. The medieval architecture (1677); old houses, traditional. Surroundings: the Geto-Dacian fortress Buridava (II BC ); baile Ocnita.

Ramnicu Valcea: city settled on the middle course of Olt, residence city of Valcea district. Old settlement, documentary mentioned in 1338. The museum of the Valceanean village (Bujoreni); the memorial house Anton Pann; monuments of architecture (XVI-XIX century); museum complex in the honor of 1848 year (Troian hill). Surroundings: the balneal-climacteric resorts Ocnele Mari, Calimanesti-Caciulata, Olanesti, Govora.

Baile Olanesti: city set on the valley of the river with the same name; permanent balneal-climacteric resort (450m. alt.) with curative waters remarked since 1760 and intensively used after 1830. Therapeutic indications: affections of the locomotive system, alimentary channel, kidneys and skin, nutritional diseases and professional diseases etc. Architectural monument wood-made -1746. Surroundings: Piatra scrisa, Pestera Pescarului (“the cave of the fisherman”), Olanestilor keys; monument of architecture (XVIII century) in the former village Olanesti.

Dragasani: settled on Olt valley. Old locality, documentary mentioned in 1535.

Slatina: city set on Olt valley, residence city of Olt district. Neolithic vestiges and remains from the Bronze Age; documentary attested in 1368. Museum of history and ethnography; bridge over Olt-1891; statues and memorial monuments. Surroundings: Brancoveni village- architectonic assembly, XVII-XVIII century, Oboga village- important pottery centre.
