COUNTY MARAMURES

Maramures - BorsaThe winding roads that come down from Prislop Pass, take you to Tara Maramuresului, (area that kept the traditions very well that is why we call it Maramuresului country), the most spreaded depression of the Oriental Carpathians, born after an immersion of the ground.

After the withdrawal of the tertiary sea , when the volcanic mountains of SV(Suceava) raised, the layers of deposits were taken to pieces, the result being the today’s mineral relief that makes Maramures so picturesque.Wet by three rivers -Viseu, Iza and Mara,affluents of Tisa, the depression is a country of forests and pastures, the plants’ breeding occupies only small areas along the valleys. An isolated region and backward sometimes, today Maramures is particularly interesting due to the beauty and the richness of folk art and especially to the wood constructions.
Prislop’s winding roads end in Viseului Valley at Gura Fantanii, where the two cottages that make up the Borsa Tourist Complex (850m.) meet. This tourist base situated at the foot of the Northern Rodnei Mountains has become an attractive tourist center and ski.

Borsa – a small strait separates Gura Fantanii from Borsa, locality that stretches almost 8 km along the Viseu Valley, dominated in the South by the imposing figure of Pietrosul Maramuresean (2305 m. height).

A wooden church with pointed steeple that exceeds several times its height, similar to those that you will find in many other villages of Maramures (monuments of architecture of great artistic value, unique in the world) and many monumental carved gates draw your attention each step. At the exit of Borsa you will see the modern TBC Sanatorium.(TBC= tuberculosis).

Going down to Viseului Valley, in whose waters lives the huck ( lostrita), species of fish of the salmon family, nowadays very rare in the Romanian rivers, we come to Moisgiu. Here there is a center for processing forest fruits (raspberry, mulberry, blueberries , mace, mushrooms, wild grapes). Here you can also visit the Black Spring Monastery(Izvorul Negru), built in 1672. In the center of the commune a monument honors the memory of the 29 peasants killed by the fascists in 1944 because they had helped the partisans who fought against the enemies.

Passing the Iza Valley we encounter Salva-Viseu railway which established an easy way to link Maramures and the rest of the country.

In the south part of Iza valley, guarded in the South by the heights of Tibles Mountains (1842m. height), you can meet Saliste, Dragomiresti ( from where the beautiful church which dominates the Village Museum in Bucharest, a construction of 1732 was brought) and Cuhea localities.

In Cuhea – locality in which the legendary Dragos Voda started the pursuit of the white wild bull which took him beyond the mountains in Moldova – there is a beautiful wooden church built in 1718 and later restored. On the terrace that dominates the village and Iza Valley towards the south were discovered the foundations of a feudal fortress, considered to be the old residence of Bogdan voivode.. After Cuhea, you tourn left to Ieud (2km.), the locality that preserves the oldest wooden church of Maramures.
Sighetul Marmatiei - Maramures In all the communes that you cross, going down the Iza Valley, you will meet the original architectural monuments built most of them in the 18th century. The largest urban settlement is Sighetu Marmatiei municipality, an important industrial, agricultural and tourist center, situated at a cross road. It is documentarily noted in 1329 and on its hearth an inventory was revealed and it showed that the native population was present here since the 9th century.

Sighetu has a valuable ethnographic museum, including objects of folk art of the area. From Sighetu Marmatiei a local road falls down along Tisa to Sapanta (with its famous „Happy Cemetery”) and The Small Tece where it enters Tara Oasului.Merry Cemetery Sapanta - Maramures

Leaving Iza Valley on our left, we are moving towards the heights of Gutai Mountains, following Valea Marei. Villages allign as a chain line on the water, drown in green orchards. The carved gates, the houses covered with tile and the wood churches continue to draw our attention. At feasts the natives’ costumes fill in the beautiful local scenery and you can say without exaggeration that the Valea Marei road, and also the Iza Valley is a huge gallery of folk art. After we go through some communes we finally get to Ocna Sugatag,a spa situated at 490 metres height with salted water and very old salt exploitations. After several kilometres we arrive at another spa called Breb, situated at the Northern foot of Gutai Mountain.

The resort is surrounded by extensive beech forests and has three sources of sulfurous mineral water, used in both external and internal cures.

After we cross Desesti municipality, with its beautiful wooden church built in 1717 and admire some beautiful gates of Maramures, the road climbs to the summit of Gutai passing through a massive forest of leafy trees. Sometimes towards East the crenated ridge of a peak (1147m Creasta Cocosului 1147 meters height) can be seen; after that the road falls in the Northern mountains and enters the Sasar Valley. Arriving at Baia Sprie, mining settlement which in 1329 appeared in documents with Baia Mare under the name Civitas de Medio Monte and which in the same century received the privileges of a town.

From Baia Sprie, the road will continue to Sasar Valley and close to the entrance in Baia Mare we leave the Firiza Valley on the right and the road that penetrates on the „Valley of the Saw”(as i tis this valley called) into the heart of Gutai Mountains.
Baia Mare - Maramures The city Baia Mare residence of Maramures county is a real surprise for the tourist. In the center of the city we can admire the old building with arched entrances, thick walls and narrow streets that recall medieval town, together with the new center with bright blocks of simple lines and vivid colors, with wide green spaces. Besides the food industry branches, Baia Mare is a cultural center (pedagogical institute, the state theater).

Among the tourist attractions of the city, we can mention:
- Turnul Stefan (Stephen’s Tower, also called the Clock tower),a medieval building of the 15th century situated in a picturesque hilly region, which dominates the old city center and which was a witness of the historical events that took place on the banks of Sasar;Tower of Stefan - Baia Mare

- the high towers of the medieval fortress built by the on the bankd of Sasar
- the County Museum with its interesting history section;
- the chestnut orchards in the surrounding area of the city with edible fruit ;
- Iancu de Hunedoara’s house of the 15th century located in the Liberty Square,
- The Butchers’ Tower- that proves that the locals were organized in guilds;
- The Holy Trinity Church in Baroque style and a number of houses considered monuments of architecture.

We can consider Baia Mare a starting point for another tourist attractions: Firiza dam and lake Firiza, nature reserve of the edible chestnut, Apa Sarata (climateric resort), Mogosa resort with cabin on Bodi lake, known by the Schi run , Suior Resort Complex and Izvoarele Resort.
