BANAT – ZARAND – NORTD OF HUNEDOARA

Route Description:Timisoara- Arad- Lipova- Siria- Pancota- Sebes- Moneasa- Gurahont- Vata de Jos-Tebea- Brad- Deva- Lugoj- Timisoara

The trip combines the virtues of Banat field with the heights of Zarand country and the soft hills from the north of Hunedoara’s lands

Timisoara: city set on the shores of Bega river; residence of Timis district. From Neolithic, elements of uninterrupted human culture; “Castrum temesiensis” documentary mentioned in 1212. Hunazilor Castle (1308, 1856)-museum of history, natural sciences, ethnography, plastic arts; fortress(XVI century, remains); old city hall (1734), old prefecture(1754), “Dicasterial” palace (XIX century, 273 rooms), the house “with tree”. Surroundings: natural reservation “Arboretum”-Bazos; Calacea village, (permanent balneal resort, 117m. alt. recommended in treating the affections of the locomotive system, genecology).

Arad: city set on Mures shores; residence of Arad District. Ancient vestiges, territory of some Romanian principality from early middle age, mentioned in 1156. Museum of history, archeology, plastic arts, ethnography- Palatul Culturii-1913 (the Palace of Culture), fortress-1783; historic monuments and of architecture (XVIII-XIX centuries); old theatres-1817 and new-1894, museum; “the house with iron lock”-1815.

Lipova: city settled on the superior valley of Mures, documentary attested in XII century. Museum of history, ethnography, popular art, furniture (XIX century), Soimos fortress (XIII-XV centuries); Turkish bazaar (1613-1716); Romanian school (XIX century); architecture monuments (XIV-XVIII century). Surroundings: Baile Lipova (permanent balneal resort; 138m. alt. recommended in treating the cardio-vascular affections, alimentary channel and urinal channel).

Siria: village placed in a region of well known vineyards, residence of a principality from XIV century. Fortress (XIII century, ruins); memorial museum Ion Slavici (1848-1925); permanent exhibit dedicated to the composer Emil Montia (1887-1965); Bohus castle (XIX century), statues.

Pancota: young town on the shores of Bigiu river. Famous borough (XVIII century) and trade center (XIX century), fortress (XIV, ruins) baroque castle-1840.

Sebis: city set on the middle valley of Crisul Alb. Collection of local historic and ethnographic  pieces; castle.

Moneasa: village placed at the foots of Codru Moma mountain, on the valley of the river with the same name. permanent balneal-climacteric resort -280m. alt. developed after 1886. Therapeutic indications: affections of the locomotive system, alimentary channel, fatigue, nervous asthenia. Commemorative board on the house where the sculptor Gheorghe Groza born; leisure lake. Surroundings: caves, quarry of red marble, hatcheries, mountainous trips.

Gurahont: village settled on the middle course of Crisul Alb. The monument of Ion Buteanu, prefect of Zarand (1848), castle (XIX century), surroundings:  Zimbru village (botanic reservation “Dosul Laurului”; Jumelt oven for iron melting- XIX century; area of ethnographic and folkloric interest).

Vata de Jos: village settled on the valley of CrisulAlb. Permanent balneal resort -280m. alt. recommended in treating the affections of locomotive system, marginal nervous system, alimentary channel.

Tebea: village settled on the superior basin of Crisul Alb. Gorunul lui Horea, the tombs of more “pasoptisti” (Avram Iancu, Ioan Buteanu and others; historic monument (XIX century). At 6th of December 1935, here was signed the document of founding the Anti-fascist Popular Front.

Brad: city on Crisului Alb valet, traditional spiritual and economic centre of Zarandului country. In XIV century, at Brad, for the first time in the world, was used the trolley in gold mines; the tracks were wood made and had switch invented by a Romanian engineer. Museum of mining; statues (Crisan, A. Iancu).

Deva: city set on Muresului valley, residence of Hunedoara district. Dacian and Roman vestiges; documentary attested in 1269. Museum of history, archeology, natural sciences, popular art-Magna Curia palace (XVI-XVIII centuries); statues: Decebal, Horia, Closca and Crisan, Dr. Petru Groza; fortress (XIII century; ruins) on Dealul cetatii (Botanic natural reservation).

Lugoj: city set on the stream of Timis. In the ancient centre, documentary attested in 1334. Museum of history, natural sciences, ethnography; Birtul Postei-1726.
