Route Description:

Drobeta Turnu Severin- Orsova- Baile Herculane- Caransebes- Poiana Marului- Sarmizegetusa- Densus- Hateg- Petrosani- Targu Jiu- Hobita- Tismana- Cerneti- Drobeta Turnu Severin

The trip, of a great variety of the landscape, offers also the direct contact with places and monuments that are considered unique in the country-Baile Herculane, Sarmizegetusa, Densu, Valea Jiului

Drobeta Turnu Severin: city-harbor at Danube; residence of Mehedinti district. Geto-Dacian settlement, Drobeta, Roman city, feudal fortress- trough the first in the country. The museum “Portile de Fier”, Roman camp Drobeta (II AC), thermals, vestiges of the bridge built over Danube by Apolodor (102-105); fortress (XIII-XIV; ruins) statues of Decebal and Traian. Surroundings: Crihala forest; Portile de Fier (hydro-energetic and navigation complex).

Orsova: city-harbor settled at the infusion of Cerna in the reservoir of Portile de Fier. New settlement,  nearby the old city, now under the level of Danube- the ancient Dierna, than Castrum Urscia (X-XI century), probably the residence of the voivode Glad. Leisure place-trips by boat along the reservoir. Surroundings:  Portile de fier- hydro-energetic and navigation complex.

Baile Herculane: city set on the inferior course of Cerna. Permanent balneal-climacteric resort-160m. alt., with thermal mineral waters widely used in Roman antiquity (Therme Herculi). Therapeutic indications: affections of the locomotive system, genecology, professional diseases, affections of the alimentary channel. Ancient balneal installations; constructions from the old sanatorium complex (XVIII-XIX century); museum of history, the statue of Hercules-1847. Surroundings: Domogled mountain (natural reservation, 1100-1300m. alt.); Grota haiducilor, Grota cu aburi (caves), Cernei valley.

Caransebes: city placed at the confluence of Sebes with Timis. Neolithic vestiges, Dacian settlement, than Roman Camp Tibiscum ( II AC  ). Attested in 1289 under the name of Sebes, unites with Caran locality in XV century, composing the name from today. Museum of history and ethnography (in the former barrack of the guards, XVIII century); the monument of the general Ion Gragalina (1860-1916). Surroundings: Muntele Mic- climacteric and winter sports practicing, 1540m. alt.

Poiana Marului: village set on the valley of Bistrita Marului river; climacteric resort-645m. alt. at the foots of the northern versant of Muntele Mic (climacteric resort).

Sarmizegetusa: village settled on Zeicani valley. Ulpia Traiana Augusta Dacica colony, city founded by Traian emperor (108-110)- center of administration, practicing the emperor’s cult and of a vast “territorium” urban-rural from Roman Dacia; the name of Sarmizegetusa was added in the times of  Adrian emperor. The ancient city (amphitheatre, forum, temple, aqueduct, private houses, vestiges)- the most wide and rich archeology complex of this kind from the country; museum of history and geography.

Densus: village settled on the valley of Galben river. Residence of Manjina princes (XIV century), the place of origin of Densusianu family. Monument of architecture unique in the country, built in XIII century on the ruins of an antique construction (IV century) with stone brought from Sarmizegetusa.

Hateg: city set near the confluence of Siret with Raul Mare. Main locality of the country of Hateg, appeared in documents in XIII-XIV century as centre of a Romanian state formation of principality type (Terra Hatzeg). Area of folkloric interest. Surroundings: Slivut forest- natural reservation.

Petrosani: city set on the valley of eastern Jiu. Settlement developed after 1850 when starts the massive exploitation of carbon on the highway: Petrosani-Lupeni-Petrila-Lone-Aninoasa. Museum of mining. Surroundings: Rusu-Parangul Mare chalet, 1579m. alt.; Petrila- marked paths to Sebes mountains; Uricani-acces to Retezat mountains- Peleaga cliff, 2509m. alt.

Tismana: village set on the valley of the shore with the same name. hydro-energetic arrangements. Folkloric area of tradition (materials and specific cloths); “Festivalul cantecului si dansului gorjan”-“The festival of the Gorjan music and dance” (half of August); historic monument and of architecture; Surroundings: natural reservation ( comestibles chestnuts), karst phenomena.

Hobita: village placed on Gorjean Bistrita valley. House-museum Constantin Brancusi; wood architecture, traditional.

Targu Jiu: city placed on the shores of Jiu; residence of Gorj district. Geto-Dacian settlement, administrative centre of Jales realm (XV century).  The complex of the monumental sculptures of Constantin Brancusi; museum of history, plastic art, monuments of architecture (XVIII century); the memorial house and the mausoleum of Ecaterina Teodoroiu. Surroundings: Curtisoara village ( The museum of the Gorjan village, Cornoiu dome (XVIII century), Runcu village (Runcului-Sohodol keys, Sohodol chalet).

Cerneti: city set next to the point of Topita disgorging into Danube. Locality documentary attested in 1571, former capital of Mehedinti district until 1840. Cula of Tudor Vladimirescu (XVIII century, museum); cula Nistor (XV-XVIII century, moved from ADa-Kaleh island).
