Hateg depression or Hateg country is an intra-Carpathian old depression, a tectonic pit where the waters of some seas and lakes subsisted. Is a land of attractive picturesque, where the connection of the physic-geographic elements with the modern accomplishments created a favorable place for the human life.
At the shelter of the mountains, the climate is without great differences between summer and winter. The lands great for culture, the richness of the forests, the mountain’s waters rich in fishes and the lands with grass propitious for raising animals, facilitated the human life from ancient times, which means from the carved stone age or maybe years back. The marks of some fortress walls, guarding towers, built by Dacians than Romans, represent the testimony of an intense habitation in those times, as well as the architectural genius of our ancestors.

From the close bond of the man with the nature, with the time, in this land of great circulation “nucleus of the dacian state” resulted various spiritual productions, which express the love for beauty, refinement in all the ethnographic and folkloric elements. An authentic popular culture, very original, preserved here. The shepherdess and agriculture always inspired the anonymous creator. In the localities from Luncani platform and the old mountains of Orastie are the famous carpets, shells, doilies, generally elements found in the houses, than folk costumes, all admirable pieces.
Some Dacian settlements from Gradiste basin- from the Burebists-Decebal époque – the fortresses from Costesti, Blindaru, Gradistea muncelului, Piatra Rois – significant from scientific point of view, attract researchers and tourists. If you pass on the western side of Hateg country in Pradureni region, you will see a series of ethnographic elements, unseen in other places.

The folk custom of long tradition, praiseworthy, surprises trough the beauty of its specific pieces, both for women and men. The ornamental tracery of the women’s smocks are based especially on geometric forms, which provide a great distinction, broad thong, sheepskin coat with flowers are pieces that emphasize the diversity of clothing elements.

Also the old houses, wood made have some specific parts, as the fireplace and the funnel.
The customs, the songs and the folk traditions represent another valuable treasure of the country of Hateg, a lot kept in their original shape; the tradition of “cerbul caluseilor, strigarea peste sat” (“roundabout’s buck, the calling over the village”) or the one from Silnasul de Jos “incununarea boului” (“wreathing of the bullock”) that takes place in the summer time. The ritual of knitting crowns of knapweeds and poppies symbolizes the fertility and the lustiness. The ceremonial is in June, and than it is chosen the laborious householder and the most beautiful and forceful animal. All this creations of popular anonymous are today organized as amateur’s artistic spectacles.

A touristic objective of great importance in this region is Sarmizegetusa-Ulpia traiana-with the ruins of the town built by Romans after conquering Dacia –as local museum.

At Crivadia is a guard tower, at Hunedoara – Castelul Huniazilor (castle) and other historic monuments of great value. The country of Hateg is settled in Sureanu Mountains at east, Retezat at south and Poiana Ruscai Mountains at north.
