marginea - black potteryFrom Radauti, Following the highroad we arrive at Marginea ( 8 km. ), Known especially as a center of black pottery who’s origin goes back till bronze age. The black pottery, polished by stone which is still made at Marginea, was assumed by Getac-Dacians. Its persistence until today is due to the quality of the pots, highly resistant to fire and it is the proof of the continuity of the aboriginal population in this area.

Marginea is a crossroad, national road 17 A which continues SW to Sucevita village and Sucevita monastery crossing a country road that links the upper valley of Suceava river the Moldova river’s valley.

Following the country road that goes to Vicarul de Jos and them follows the Suceava’s valley to west and Putna brook to north, we arrive at Putna Monastery ( 35 km. ), the legendary founding of Stephen the Great, risen between 1466-1469. Here it is the tomb of the ruler and an old art museum.

The city of Radauti has developed from a village situated on domain of the local bishopric founded in the second half of the XV-th century. In Sighetu Marmatiei city is situated at the confluence of Iza with Tisa river ( Maramures ). Here we found a modern terracotta factory and pottery.
At Horezu there’s an annual potter’s fair market where artisans all over the country come to show their works: different items of popular art, day pots of all kinds, carpets, blankets, tissue fabrics and popular seamless ( national costumes ), wooden sculptures and where the tourists appreciate the work of those creators and carriers of ancestral traditions.

Without deviating from tradition, from the long standing experience, the ceramists have also passed at building “monumental ceramic”. In Corund a Fair contest-ceramic is organised every year – “a manifestation of craftsmen in the pottery art, with the participation of other representative pottery centers of our country, where, along ceramists, participate ethnologists and different researchers to stimulate the concern and the artistic taste of the ones presents. The aragonite that is being exploited near by Corund is used to manufacture various pottery items.

Maramures - Carved gates In Maramures to Sighetul Marmatiei we leave to the left the road of the Iza Valley and we are moving towards the heights of Gutâi mountains, following Mara Valley, where villages string as a necklace on the water line, drowned in green orchards. Carved gates, houses covered by shingle and wooden churches continue to capture our attention.
