Getting closer to Vaslui, at around 2km before entering the city, we pass trough the wooded hills of Plaiului (at the left) and Coasta Muntenilor (at the right).
The place deserves a halting near the monument from Plaiului hill built in 1954. It reminds one of the biggest battles from the history of Romania and a glorious victory. Here, on this narrow place, Stefan cel Mare with its small army waited at 10 January, 1475, the killing Turkish army (120.000 people) came to vanquish Moldavia. Proving qualities of an exceptional strategic, wisely using the land and leading his 40.000 warriors, the young Moldavian hospodar succeeded to defeat the Turkish army and to obtain a victory that had a real echo in Europe. Even the Turkish chronicles wrote after this battle: “ it was a terrible carnage and a little was missing for all to be cut in pieces and only hardly Suliman Pasa saved his life running”.
All the land of Vaslui was lived from ancient times: the archeological discoveries from Poenesti brought to light remaining from the material culture from Neolithic until the migratory period. On these places the carps lived, than the Gothic, Gepidae, Slavs, Cumans and other people, culminating with the Tartars, which existence of centuries near Vaslui was a permanent source of dangers for the inhabitants of these places.
What offer a sense and special historical value of these lands are the facts of a deep patriotism of our ancestors that served their life for protecting the saint territory of our country. Vaslui entered in history especially trough the gold époque of Stefan cel Mare. The inhabitants of the city contributed to important events from the past. Until the stormy year 1907, many times the countrymen from here asked trough claiming and facts the right of a better life. From Vaslui left the 9 soldiers with the 10th sergeant, as well as many more sons of the people that offered parables of patriotism in the independence war from 1877.
Together with the entire population, numerous people from Vaslui fought in 1917 with renunciation and sacrifice at Marasti, Marasesti and Oituz against the German conquerors.
Historic monuments:
-St Ioan church, construction realized meanwhile Stefan cel Mare was leading (1490),
-the ruins of the voievode fortress,
-the mausoleum of Penes Curcanul and of the soldiers from Plevna, settled in the cemetery of the city, are a proof of those weltered past times.
Vaslui is today a powerful economical and social-cultural centre.
In the district were arranged places that offer points of attraction and pleasure:
-Dobrina forest near Husi,
- the forests from Barlad, Vaslui, Husi;
-“Ulciorul” camping from Sarbi and the one from Dobrina-Husi;
- the zoological garden from Barlad.
A special importance present the historic and architectonic monuments:
-Podul Inalt, the place were a battle of Stefan cel Mare took place;
-Movila lui Burcel;
- the statue of sergeant Musat from Barlad;
-the statue of Alexandru I.Cuza from Husi;
- the house Rosetti-Solescu;
-the two churches from Barlad (XVIII century);
-archeological monuments: Movila Rabaia near Husi, the ground fortress from Barlad.
