COUNTY TIMIS
TIMISOARA
Timisoara is settled on lowland, in an area that was a moor land in the past, drained trough the drainage of Beghei, becoming the navigable channel Bega. The center of the city was dwelt from the Neolithic, and from antiquity roman marks were discovered, confirming the affirmation of the historic Francesco Grisellini (XVIII century) who said that under the walls of the feudal fortress, documentary attested in 1212, are the cornerstone of a roman camp. Curious is the fact that the city enters in history under the name of “the fortress from the Timis” (Castrum Temesiensis) although it is settled on Bega.
Destroyed by the tartars outrush from XII century, Timisoara rehabilitates and at the beginning of the XIV century it becomes for a short time royal residence. The importance of the fortress increases when it becomes the main centre of resistance in the way of ottomans expansion and when the great military leader Iancu de Hunedoara enlarges the fortress and rebuilt the castle that has his name. From this époque is reminded also Pavel Chinezu, the giant with a legendary force that while fighting he was killing his enemies with two swords.
In the XVI century, Timisoara is besieged by the army of the rebelled countrymen lead by Gh. Doja, even with help from outside, they are defeated. Gh Doja together with his captains suffer the rack of the throne and the crown branded in fire, and than pieces of his body are suspended on the gates of the fortress Alba Iulia, Oradea. Without the support of the people in the defense fight, the fortress was conquered by ottomans in 1522 and Banat will remain until 1718 Turkish pashalic. Restored, the city was submitted in 1848 by the revolutionary army to the longest siege (107 days) from its history.

After some years, the city succeeds to buy the fortress that will be demolished. The new history of Timisoara begins after abolishing the war marks making today from Timisoara a modern city that enchants the visitors.
