ORADEA LOCALITY

Marks of life, ceramics, stone tools discovered on the territory of Bihor district are at Oradea, Sacuieni, Sintandrei and belong to polished stone (Neolithic). A special development recorded the human communities settled on the territory of nowadays Bihor district in the metal’s age. At Otomani and Salacea were discovered large fortified settlements from bonze age.

For the Iron Age, in the stage of formation of Dacian people, the archeological marks prove a considerable development from economical and cultural point of view. In the area of the three Cris was discovered the biggest Dacian monetary treasure known until present time on the territory of our country, the treasure of silver objects from Oradea.

The marks of Scythians’ and Dacians, the marks of Romans that have not possessed these lands, but they were using the commercial roads with the agreement of the free Daco- Sarmatian tribes, were also found on the territory of the city. Near them settled the Slavs, which had a fortress on Promotor hill and than was founded the pre-state formation from IX-X century, Menumorut’s principality with the centre in the ground fortress from Biharia.

The feudal city started to develop in the surrounding area of the fortress built in XI century, but was destroyed by the tartars onrush from 1241-1242. Another fortress, more powerful, was built in XV century while the Corvini were leading, when the Dieta of Transylvania (legislature of Transylvania) gathered here for receiving the envoys of Stefan cel Mare and for signing the peace with the Turkish sultan Murad II. The target of countrymen’s revolts from XIV-XVI (part of the body of Gh. Doja, martyr in Timisoara, was hanged on fortress’s gate Oradea for scaring the serfs). Oradea’s fortress was conquered by Turkish in 1661 and for 32 years remained under their domination.
From today’s touristic objectives of Oradea, we remind:

– Oradea Fortress built in stages beginning with 1476 until XVIII century. It is placed on the shore of Pet brook. The fortress has a pentagonal shape determined by the five bastions, each of them having a name that reminds how and when it was built;
- The Episcopal palace, built between 1762-1777 on a terrace from the right shore of Crisul Repede in the middle of a park, “palace that has 365 windows”;
- The park of the Episcopal palace with the rare species of arbors, indigenous and exotics (trough them three exhibits of Secquoaia-Giganteea from California);
- The Romano-Catholic Cathedral, built between 1752-1780, inspired from the baroque construction of north Italy;
-  Capucinilor Monastery,
– Ursulinerlor Monastery,
- National Theatre, construction in neo-classical style from 1900, which hosts theatre and opera spectacles in Romanian and Hungarian,
- The Church with moon, built in 1784 in transition style, between baroque and neo-classical having inside beautiful paintings, fresco. In its tower, a sphere of 3 m diameter, auctioned by a mechanism shows the phases of the moon.

Touristic centre, Oradea city is a point of leaving for excursions, in the north-west part of our country: to north starts DN 19 which crosses Crisurilor field to Carei and Satul Mare,-to west from Oradea continues till the border Bors Dn1 which connects the main international highways from centre and west Europe, -to south leaves from Oradea DN 79 which, from Salonta, makes the connection with Arad. To south-west goes from Oradea DN63 which, trough Beius Vascau and Brad reach Valea Muresului at Deva. The road goes trough a picturesque region with interesting touristic objectives.

In the district can be visited:

-Cetatea Soimilor from Alesd town;
-Cetatea Finisului – Finis village;
-Cetatea Adorian – Salard village (fortresses);
-Turnul ciunt – tower of fortress- Salonta village.
-There are also numerous wood-made churches declared monuments of architecture;
-Baile Felix and 1 Mai;
-Meziad and Vadul Crisului caves.
