ARAD MUNICIPALITY

Residence of the county with the same name, “The City on River Mures” as it is called, is located at an altitude of 110m,situated on the banks of the west course of the calm river, at a 20km distance from the mountains. In the east, the hills around, lowering from the latest waves of Zarandului Mountains, form the well known vineyard of Arad with orchards and vineyards. It is located on the right bank of the Mures River in an alluvial plain. People have setlled on these lands since the Neolithic Age (traces were found in two districts Aradul Nou and Micalaca). During the Roman Dacia, on Mures (at Aradul Nou)a castle was built in order to defend its Western border, castle that was part of a series of smaller fortifications alligned on Mures (at Bulci, Arad and New Cernad) as towers of the great camp in Micia.

As a feudal city Mures has been known since the 11th century and documentarily certified in the 12th century when it became the center of a feudal domain whose peasants uprose in 1400, 1510 and 1514 when they joined Gh.Doja’s Revolt. The city’s development was hindered by the Turkish occupation (1522)which lasted with interruptions until the 18th century. (In 1600 Arad is released by Michael the Brave). Crossroad of trade routes from Banat in the north and along Muresului Valley, the city of Mures developed fast I the economic and cultural domains.
After its destruction in 1685 due to the fighting between Turks and Austrians, the city is rebuilt relatively quickly. Social-cultural buildings, manufactures, and later companies were built (the first steam mills 1860),railways that linked the city with its surroundings (since 1859). In 1812 one of the first pedagogical schools in Banat and Crisana was founded and the theater building was built in1817 (among the oldest buildings in the country). In the second half of the 19th century after the Revolution of 1848 Arad was rebuilt on a systematic plan, the center being given the aspect that generally can be seen today.

Among the tourist attractions of the city we can mention:

- Michael the Brave-Square where the covered hall of the city is located ,
- The County Park that stretches until Mures River, on whose bank the nautical bases can be seen;
-The Palace of Culture, building of the 19th century, with three facades treated in different architectural styles in which the Central City Library functions,
- The County Museum opened in 1892, with a section of ancient history, an art section(reorganized and completed in 1953);
-The Orthodox Cathedral, monument of Baroque architecture built in 1698;
– Simion Stilpnicul Monastery, baroque building;
-  Arad fortress-built in 1762-1783 with an ensemble of baroque style
- Ceala Forest and Mures Island, a place of entertainment with swimming place and beach at about 7km from the city center.

From Arad you may make trips to visit other monuments of nature: “Dosul bourului” Natural Reserve in Zimbru; the secular oaks in Petris. You could also go and admire the beautiful surroundings of Moneasa, Savarsin, Mures Strait(Defileul Muresului), Dezuei Valley, Cladova Valley and Cladovitei Valley. Here you will find pleasant and welcoming challeys like ebelea Gora, Ghioroc and Casoaia, the last one especcialy for tourists of Ghioroc.
