TARGOVISTE 1Placed on Ialomita valley, at the exit of Ialomita from the area oh sub-Carpathian hill, the locality has a special landscape. The first documentary testimonials concerning some important settlements on the territory of nowadays Dambovita district come from the XIV century from Johanees Schiltberger and refer at Targoviste that he visited. Being settled in a great strategic and economic position, Targoviste was in the attention of various Wallachian hospodars. In Xvi and XVII century, the city reached to the top of its development, becoming the main economical, political and cultural centre of Wallachia. It met a powerful growth period under the leading of Matei Basarab (1633-1654). Around 1660, under the leading of Gheorghe Ghica, the capital of the country was moved from Targoviste to Bucharest. It dwindled in XVIII and XIX century, especially after the destructions during the Turkish-Austrian war in 1737-1739. These lands are witnesses of some important events from 1821, here taking place some movements of the mutineers leaded by Tudor Vladimirescu. Alexandru Ipsilante settled his army in Targoviste, and their camps at Margineni monastery and in Lucieni, Calcanul and Vacaresti villages; the yard of the Metropolitan church known the tragic end of Tudor, caught and brought here by the kidnaper Iordache Olimpiotul.

TARGOVISTE 2 The monuments of architecture and painting are numerous and very important for our past.
Targoviste was strengthen by a fortress that today is an important touristic objective of the city. Some hundred of years ago Macarie founded the first printing house from Wallachia. At Targoviste were printed several books. In 1652 (during the leading of Matei Basarab) met the printing in Romanian of the first laws (“ Indreptarea legii”), important juridical pieces.In Targoviste lived and created part of their creations the chroniclers Radu Popescu, Constantin Stolnicul Cantacuzino and also here lived Vasile Carlova, Ion Heliade Radulescu, Grigore Alexandrescu. Alexandru Vlahuta and Duliu Zamfirescu have part of their activity here and Gh. Marinescu –savant doctor, Alexandru I. Bratescu Voinesti – writer, Tony Bulandra and Mihai Popescu – actors born here.

The development of the art and culture mirror in customs, clothing, plays, architecture and popular art which still preserve the folkloric traditions of the nation.
