SIGHISOARA CITY

sighisoaraThe pearl of Tarnava” – “Margaritarul Tarnavei” welcomes tourists with the fortress set in the summit of a hill and with the crowded houses which provides a wonderful and attractive view. From touristic point of view, Sighisora attracts trough its picturesque position and trough its medieval aspect conserved in the old city as well as in the centre of the city; for this reason it was declared historic monument.

The settlement is very old, and this is proved by the objects from the Bronze Age discovered on Dealul Turcului, which stays close to the city on the Tarnava Mica bank; proved by the vestiges from the I century and the tombs of cremation from the Daco- Roman period which lead to the supposition that here existed also a roman camps. In the pre-feudal époque, the rural settlement from here, at the crossing of some commercial roads, has been transformed into a city of merchants and handicrafts. In the second part of the XIV century, the majority of the population gives up on the agriculture; the number of the merchants and handicrafts, organized in crafts becomes higher. In the second half of the XI century, the city intensifies the trades with Moldavia and Wallachia and in this period was built most of the city’s monuments.
From the historical events we remind that Vlad Dracul, the leader of Wallachia lived from 1431 until 1435 in Sighisoara. He was named “Dracul” because he received from the Germany’s Emperor the Dragon Order – Ordinul Dragonului. The voivode sets a monetary emission, and on the coins his face appeared; this currency was used at Brasov and Sibiu.

sighisoara Clock Tower From the touristic objectives of the city we remind:

-the Museum of the Fortress settled in the Tower with clock, 60m high, under which it is the entrance in the fortress and that was built in XIV century. This interesting museum includes numerous testimonials about the life, the medieval customs and the abilities of the local handicrafts.

-The Medieval Fortress – in XII was built the first kernel around the church from the hill. The fortress was enlarged and fortified in the next centuries, obtaining the aspect kept until today, after the restoring from XV century.

-The Church from the hill, construction from XIV-XV centuries, constructed from uncut quarry’s stone in gothic style. It is one of the eldest churches hall-type from our country and still preserves the beautiful decorative carvings in stone. The road to this church is a wood made stair, covered by a wood gallery, built in 1654.
Sighisoara monastery church -The church of the monastery settled at the opposite side of the hill, built initially at the end of the XII century, in which is an altar and an organ from 1680; on its balconies are numerous oriental carpets.

From Sighisoara, the tourist can go in excursions to balneal-climacteric resorts Sovata and Singiorgiu de Mures; at Iernut is the former castle Kornis-Rakoczi-Bethlem, construction began in 1545, with ulterior modifications; at Gornesti is a castle built in XVIII in baroque style, which has 52 rooms and 365 windows, that signify the 52 weeks and 365 days of the year.

Poiana Maicilor, Padurea Mociar with multi-secular oaks as well as the villages-keepers of old traditions can be visited.
Sighisoara is settled in the south side of Mures district, Tarnava Mare Valley, having road and railway means of connection with Tg. Mures city.
