ROMAN MUNICIPALITY
Continuing our way on Siret Vallet trough a calm, various and catchy landscape, we reach in Roman, city at the confluence of Moldova with Siret and which has the name of the Moldavia’s hospodar Roman I Musat, being reminded for the first time in 1392 in one of his documents. Borough (named as Targul de Jos – The Borough from the bottom) on the old commercial road of Siret which connected Poland with the manholes of Danube, Roman had ever since XV century a wood-made fortress; which was dwelt in 1483 by Stefan cel Mare with “Cetatea Noua” ( The New Fortress) made of stone near this place ( Gadinti village) where the courageous leader gathered his army many times. City of craftsmen and merchants organized in guilds and the centre of a Episcopal church ever since Alexandru cel Bun, Roman is also reminded in the history as the place where Dosoftei made the first Romanian versification in 1673 and where was decapitated the chronicler Miron Costin in 1691, in Gadelui Square from the order of Constantin Cantemir.
In the past a small country borough, which had as a main road a “chain of wood booths, damped since forever with long and hanged eaves” as Costache Negruzzi wrote, Roman became today a powerful industrial and cultural centre.
From the touristic objective of the city we mention:
- The city’s museum with an interesting historic section;
-the locality’s park with summer theater and complex of museums inaugurated in 1963 which contains a museum of natural science, with a section of cosmogony and a exhibit of protection of natural monuments;
- the Roman’s Episcopal church begun by Petru Raresh in 1542 (replacing the eldest built by Alexandru cel Bun) and finished by Ilies in 1550 which preserves a valuable assembly of original fresco;
- Precista Maria Church founded by Ruxandra, the wife of Alexandru Lapusneanu, in 1569.
