CURTEA DE ARGES

At 60 km of Ramnicu Valcea, the road continues to climb to Valea Argesului, road that passes to Curtea de Arges. This road crosses a picturesque hilly region and presents two important touristic objectives. Curtea de Arges is one of the oldest settlements from Wallachia, famous trough the well known piece of art of the dab Manole – Curtea de Arges monastery, but also because other touristic objectives. The city is known as a borough since the end of the XII century. In XIV century Curtea de Arges became the main fortress of Wallachia. During this time a Court and a church have been built, constructions that continued to be used even after the capital was moved to Targoviste. Centuries after it remained a borough proud of its history, but today the town developed becoming an industrial centre, with unities of wood processing, fabrics and aliments production.

Climacteric resort of sub mountainous area(450m altitude), the city is also an attractive touristic centre; being settled in a picturesque region, on the most important road of access from south to the tops of the Fagaras mountains. A real interest present the old architectural monuments of the city:

-the ruins of the Hospodar’s court – built from river’s boulders around 1370 (during the leading of Vladislav I);

-the ruins of the church Sannicora, construction from the last years of the XIII century/ the first of the XIV century;

-The Hospodar’s Church, in which a valuable assembly from the initial fresco preserved;

- The bishop’s church, founded by Neagoe Basarab in 1512-1517 with a rich decoration of sculptures in stone;

- The fountain of the dab Manole, the one that constructed the Episcopal church, generating the popular legend of the ingenious dab;

- Olari Church, settled in the quarter of the potters, modest construction with an asymmetric plan, the date of foundation is not known.

Continuing to climb the Arges Valley, we reach to Corbeni and than to Capataneni, where was built the hydra-electric power station on Arges which uses the energetic resources of the Arges river and its affluent. A dam in circle arrow 165m high and 307 long keeps the waters of the Arges at the exit from the Keys and determined the formation of a lake of around 14km, with a volume of 500 millions cubic meter of water. The flow of the river doubled trough the abstraction of the neighbor rivers (Raul Doamnei, Valsan, Topolog).

The beauty of the Arges’s Keys, the ruins from Poenari ascribed from tradition to Vlad Tepes, the lake from the back of the dam until Cumpana and the roads that go forward in the heart of the mountains made from this place a touristic center of high attraction.
